We use phrases like "They couldn't see the forest for the trees," meaning that the detail of the situation so overwhelmed them that they could not see the big picture. That's what is going on in journalism. Many are bemoaning the demise of newspapers and falling circulation, but these times may be the best of times for the dissemination of news. I can operate a full-featured online newspaper with a base cost of less than $150 a month including hosting and the publishing system, about the same as coffee money for most people. Bottom line: Traditional news sources are indeed failing, but the big picture is that now more and more people can become news site owners and news reporters because it is so cheap to get into the business. We can have a lot more watchdogs than ever before.
